I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of yesterday,
informing me that His Excellency the Governor desires to learn my
views on the question of the currency.
In reply I have much pleasure in stating that I think the
colony would be greatly benefited by its currency being placed on a
fixed basis, but as it has been alleged in certain influential
quarters that the trade of the Colony would suffer thereby I am
therefore strongly in favour of a Commission of Inquiry of Experts
being appointed to thoroughly thresh out the question, and decide
what is really best for trade.
